The official OTOY website includes Octane Render's system requirements, much like it does for most other apps. However, it is a component of their FAQ page, and although it contains useful compatibility information, the performance suggestions are out of date. Since their information is out of date, we at Arvuti.in have taken the time to conduct independent research to find out which hardware is optimal for Octane Render. We have developed our own list of suggestions based on this testing.

The CPU is not directly involved in the rendering of scenes in Octane Render or most other GPU-based engines. However, calculations are made in front of rendering, in between animation frames, and so forth. A quick multi-core CPU, for instance, "will significantly improve the scene loading speed," according to OTOY's FAQ.

Our testing indicates that the major influence on CPU performance while using Octane is clock speed. It doesn't appear that core count matters at all. This is in good agreement with the CPU needs of other applications that are commonly used in conjunction with Octane Render: high clock speeds are optimal for Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, and similar programs. If you use other programs in addition to those, particularly any CPU-based rendering engines, that could alter your preferences for system type. In addition to falling performance, a CPU's support for PCI-Express lanes should be taken into account. As video cards are the main source of Octane rendering performance, this will control the maximum number of video cards that can be used.

As already known, the CPU alone won't help in Octane's rendering; however, it will decide how many video cards the system can support, which will have an effect on performance. Here are a few suggestions we have:

AMD Ryzen 7 7700X 8 Core: One of the CPUs with the fastest clock speed on the market, this one performs exceptionally well in modeling/animation and Octane Render apps. It supports twin video cards in addition to other common hardware devices (NVMe drives, etc.) with an adequate number of PCI-Express lanes.

 

AMD Threadripper PRO 7965WX 24 Core: Compared to more consumer-focused variants, AMD's Threadripper PRO processors provide much more PCI-Express lanes. This CPU can support up to four video cards in a single tower workstation when paired with the appropriate motherboard. The ability to fit three or four high-end GPUs in a single system comes at the cost of increased platform costs; however, this benefit is offset in many applications.

Memory (RAM)

While the exact quantity of RAM you require will vary depending on your specific projects, we typically recommend 32GB at the very least for Octane Render (and GPU rendering in general), if not more. It is common for rendering engines, such as Octane, to work in concert with other programs, so you should consider how much memory they will require. In the same way that scene complexity affects how much VRAM Octane needs on your visual card(s), so too does scene complexity affect how much system memory a 3D modeling program like Cinema 4D, Maya, or 3Ds Max requires.

The choice of video card is what determines octane rendering performance. Render capabilities are influenced by two factors of a video card: the card's memory capacity and the GPU's actual speed. Rendering huge and complex scenes will be limited by video memory. GeForce cards often offer respectable amounts of visual memory along with strong raw performance; in contrast, Quadro cards are more expensive for the same amount of raw performance but feature higher quantities of VRAM. For the majority of Octane users, we therefore advise GeForce series cards.

• GeForce RTX 4080 16GB: This graphics card is a fantastic option if you only need one or two and don't work with extremely complicated situations.

• GeForce RTX 4090 24GB: With an incredible 24GB of RAM, the RTX 4090 offers the highest performance in octane rendering and is our top choice for the majority of GPU rendering customers.

• NVIDIA RTX 6000 Ada 48GB: NVIDIA's professional GPUs are a good choice for people who want a lot of GPU memory and/or wish to stack multiple video cards in the same system.

Storage Device

Primary Drive: OS/Software (SSD/NVMe): Includes your operating system and the base Octane Render installation. An SSD is highly recommended as it will greatly improve how fast the OS and programs startup, but you can also upgrade to a faster NVMe drive for a small performance benefit. The recommended storage for installation of software is not more than 10 GB.

Since the primary drive will primarily be used to store Windows and software, including all software (except large Game), it doesn't need to be that large for the majority of users; a 500GB SSD will be enough for Drive C.

Secondary Drive: Project Files (Platter/SSD/NVMe) Having a second storage (either SSD or HHD) for storing assets and effects is a wonderful alternative if you have additional money to spend or keep a lot of them around for use on different projects. Of course, an internal or external hard drive is a more cost-effective option than a high-capacity SSD if you need more mass storage and preservation.
