Hardware Recommendations for Foundry Nuke
While Arvuti.in maintains a Hardware Selection and Configuration Guide for Foundry Nuke that is much better than the simple “Hardware Requirements” list most developers provide, it contains some information that, in our experience, is either dated or simply not the best practice for a solid and reliable workstation. In addition, it lacks specific information on performance between different hardware options, such as what the benefit actually is between different models or numbers of GPUs.
To offset this missing information, we’ve taken the time to perform our own testing to determine both what hardware runs Foundry Nuke the best and exactly what kind of performance you can expect from different hardware options.
Processor
Nuke tasks are primarily single-threaded; you should give high clock speeds priority. In that sense, AMD's Ryzen chips are usually a close second to Intel's high-end Core CPUs. We specifically suggest the 13-generation upper processors from Intel.
The AMD Ryzen 7000 Series, Intel 13th Generation or newer, Threadripper 5000 Series or newer CPU with Quad Core Processor is the minimum CPU recommended for Foundry Nuke.
Memory (RAM)
While the exact amount of RAM you require will vary depending on the duration, complexity, and codec of your project, we usually advise at least 16 GB for Foundry Nuke. But Foundry Nuke can quickly use up a lot of memory, so you should make sure you have enough RAM on your computer. Remember that every piece of software requires a different amount of RAM, so if you frequently work with many programs at once, you might want to increase the amount of RAM in your system.
Depending on the various resolutions you work at, we do have a rough guideline that may help you determine the precise amount you require.
- It is recommended to have 32GB of Ram for 1080p Resolution
- It is recommended to have 64GB of Ram for 4K Resolution
- It is recommended to have 128GB of Ram for 6K/8K+ Resolution
Video Card (GPU)
Foundry Nuke makes extensive use of the video card(s) in your computer to enhance rendering and playback speeds. As a result, the performance of your system is directly impacted by the GPU you choose. It can use powerful cards with 8GB of VRAM. Additionally, while working with such types of data, the Studio version offers GPU-accelerated H.264 encoding and decoding, which frequently leads to a noticeable boost in performance. Nuke is very similar to Cinema 4D in that the viewport is all powered by the GPU.
One thing to note is that Foundry (who makes Nuke) often recommends AMD cards; they appear to have some sort of partnership. However, they also have recommended solutions with NVIDIA Quadro cards at different times, so both NVIDIA and AMD cards should work just fine.
Storage Device
Primary Drive: OS/Software (SSD/NVMe): Includes your operating system and the base Foundry Nuke installation. An SSD is highly recommended as it will greatly improve how fast the OS and programs startup, but you can also upgrade to a faster NVMe drive for a small performance benefit. The recommended storage for installation of software is not more than 15 GB
Since the primary drive will primarily be used to store Windows and software, including all software (except large games), it doesn't need to be that large for the majority of users; a 500GB SSD will be enough.
Secondary Drive: Project Files (Platter/SSD/NVMe) Having a second storage (either SSD or HHD) for storing assets and effects is a wonderful alternative if you have additional money to spend or keep a lot of them around for use on different projects. Of course, an internal or external hard drive is a more cost-effective option than a high-capacity SSD if you need more mass storage and preservation.
