Hardware Recommendations for Adobe After Effects
Similar to other software developers, Adobe keeps track of the Adobe After Effects system requirements, which you can use to make sure your computer's hardware is compatible with their software. But most "system requirements" lists simply address the minimum amount of hardware needed to run the software, not what will truly perform at its peak. In addition, these lists occasionally include substandard hardware on them, are out of date, or display obsolete hardware versions.

Processor

One of the most crucial components of an After Effects workstation is the processor, sometimes known as the CPU. Even though GPU acceleration is becoming more popular, the CPU you choose will still often have a considerably greater influence on system performance at this point. We conduct testing on a variety of hardware because it is challenging to predict a processor's performance based solely on its clock speed and number of cores due to the way After Effects uses the CPU.
Adobe recently introduced a feature to After Effects called Multi-Frame Rendering (MFR), which changed how effectively AE is able to use multi-core processors. We’ll cover some of the basics here, but for more details, you may want to refer to the article before spec’ing out a new workstation.
The minimum CPU recommended for After Effects is an Intel 11th Generation or newer CPU with Quick Sync or an AMD Ryzen 3000 Series Threadripper 2000 Series or newer CPU.
Memory (RAM)
While the exact amount of RAM you require will vary depending on the duration, complexity, and codec of your project, we usually advise at least 32GB for After Effects. But After Effects can quickly use up a lot of memory, so you should make sure you have enough RAM on your computer. Remember that every piece of software requires a different amount of RAM, so if you frequently work with many programs at once, you might want to increase the amount of RAM in your system.
Depending on the various resolutions you work at, we do have a rough guideline that may help you determine the precise amount you require.
- It is recommended to have 32GB of Ram for 1080p Resolution
- It is recommended to have 64GB of Ram for 4K Resolution
- It is recommended to have 128GB of Ram for 6K/8K+ Resolution

Video Card (GPU)

Having a supported GPU is essential for After Effects, although the effect of a more capable GPU varies depending on how many effects you use that are GPU-accelerated. Although the performance of the most recent NVIDIA GeForce RTX 30 and 40 Series GPUs is excellent, there is not much of a difference in raw performance between cards. But now that multi-frame rendering is available, the graphics card's VRAM capacity matters more than it did before.
Depending on the various resolutions you work at, we do have a rough guideline that may help you determine the precise amount you require.
- It is recommended to use 4GB of VRam for 1080p Resolution
- It is recommended to use 6 GB of VRam for 2K Resolution
- It is recommended to use 8GB of VRRAM for 4K/6K+ Resolution
- It is recommended to have 12GB+ of VRam for 8K+ Resolution
Storage Device
Primary Drive: OS/Software (SSD/NVMe): This includes your operating system and the base After Effects installation. An SSD is highly recommended as it will greatly improve how fast the OS and programs startup, but you can also upgrade to a faster NVMe drive for a small performance benefit. The recommended storage for the installation of software is not more than 12 GB.
Since the primary drive will primarily be used to store Windows and software, including all software (except large games), it doesn't need to be that large for the majority of users; a 500GB SSD will be enough.
Secondary Drive: Project Files (Platter/SSD/NVMe) Having a second storage (either SSD or HHD) for storing assets and effects is a wonderful alternative if you have additional money to spend or keep a lot of them around for use on different projects. Of course, an internal or external hard drive is a more cost-effective option than a high-capacity SSD if you need more mass storage and preservation.
